Manufacturers have received reports of exploding pool filters since at least the early 1970s. In 1974, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported “problems of exploding filter tanks.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission collects publicly-available data on exploding pool filters. For information about recalls, accidents and pool-safety issues, contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced a filter recall because the locking ring around the filter did not hold the filter together and caused explosion injuries. See http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PREREL/prhtml04/04072.html.
