Hundreds of pool filter explosions have been reported. Here are examples:
1982: filter lid “blew apart” and flew 30 feet;
1983: filter had “pressure induced” explosion;
1983: filter lid “shot up” 10 feet;
1985: filter “blew off” into man’s face;
1985: filter lid exploded into pool technician’s face;
1985: filter lid exploded into man’s face; pool-equipment manufacturer’s employee said that over previous 10 years, about nine lawsuits had been filed where exploding filter lid injured someone;
1986: filter lid exploded into victim’s face;
1986: Consumer Product Safety Commission reported “three [illegible] showing essentially the same accident scenario. Operator disassembles and [illegible] air, reassembles filter, observes a pressure build-up, reaches over the filter [illegible] shut-off switch and the filter explodes injuring the service person or owner”;
1989: filter lid blew into victim’s head, fracturing his skull;
1990: filter blew into man’s head, leaving him in semi-comatose state;
1991: filter lid blew into woman’s head, killing her;
1993: filter lid blew into man’s head;
1994: filter exploded, blinding victim and causing brain damage;
1998: filter lid blew off, flew seven feet and hit man’s face.
1998: two-piece filter top blew off into 67-year-old man’s face, knocking him unconscious;
2004: two-piece cartridge filter lid split open, forcing high-pressure water out the top;
2005: cartridge filter blew up into father's face, causing permanent brain injury;
2006: cartridge filter lid blew up into homeowner’s face, killing him;
2006: cartridge filter lid blew up into 37-year-old mother, who lost her right eye and sustained permanent brain damage in accident;
2006: boy watched cartridge filter blow up in the face of his father, who later died.
